AARVIK ECO FJORD FARM
Aarvik farm has probably existed since before the 16th century due to the good soil, the location by the fjord and the river. Written sources and what we know show that Aarvik farm has buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries with the oldest; Smokehouse with soil in the roof and most likely the forge is also from that time or older.
In the “bygdesogo” for Hålandsdalen it says that the farm under Svinasteinen was first mentioned during the 16th century, but there is no mention of the farm in 1519 according to the Soga for Fusa, Hålandsdal and Strandvik. The first time a tax was recorded was in 1563 when Arnold at Siunesøn paid 2 lots of silver in tax. Aarvik farm belonged to Svinastein (formerly called Siunesøn) farm.
Today, Ranita and Sveinung live with their 3 children on the small farm Aarvik gard in Bjørnafjorden municipality in Vestland. The bakery started in 2019 as Mrs Aarvik’s little bakery and kitchen garden with a bakery in the basement of their previous home.
SUNDVORØYA
(old trading post)
Sundvorøya, a local trading post from the 1880s with a lot of history and historical treasures.
On Sundvorøya, local trade was carried on from the 1880s, until trade arrived on the mainland. The present buildings date from this time. The main building had a “krambu” on the first floor and living quarters on the second. This house is combined with a boathouse, which was used as a warehouse.
Sundvorøya got a scheduled boat connection around 1890. The “steamer” was dispatched by boat, because it was too shallow for a steamship berth inside the trading house. According to tradition, this stone foundation should be ballast stone from Scottish wooden ships. It is said that Sundvor was a shipping port for timber in the 16th and 17th centuries. Town names such as “Skottabeleggjet” and “Bjelkaneset” are reminiscent of this first commercial enterprise at Sundvorøya.
